PUPILS from East Renfrewshire led the way in a national debate about religion this week.

Isobel Mair school in Newton Mearns welcomed religious leaders from multiple faiths yesterday (Monday), and youngsters from Eastwood, Williamwood and St Ninian’s high schools also attended for a chance to quiz the special guests.

The event was broadcast to schools throughout Scotland using the national Glow intranet system, allowing pupils from John O’Groats to Gretna the chance to put their questions to high ranking members of each faith.

Visitors in the hot seat included archbishop emeritus Mario Conti, reverend John Chalmers (clerk of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland), Imam Habib of the Glasgow central mosque, Rabbi Rubin of the Jewish Community of Scotland, Mrs Ravinder Kaur Nijjar representing the Sikh community, Shobha Nagpal of the Glasgow Hindu women’s group and more.

East Renfrewshire council’s convener for education, councillor Elaine Green, commented that the day had been “truly inspirational”.

She added: “Interfaith Scotland, Education Scotland and East Renfrewshire education department are all delighted to have co-hosted what has been a superb day with a tour of Isobel Mair and entertainment from the school choir and the wheelchair Scottish country dancing pupils of Reels on Wheels”.
