RESIDENTS at Westacres care home have been doing their bit for the boys in Afghanistan.

The Newton Mearns facility has been collecting items which can be packed into shoeboxes and sent to troops serving in the middle east, and 15 packages are now ready to be shipped.

Housekeeper and buyer Angela Ryan told The Extra: “One of our staff members is seeing a soldier, and she gave us an idea of what to include – Vaseline for their faces while they’re out in the sun, cereal bars and sweeties, as well as frisbees and puzzle books to keep the boys entertained.

“The residents very much enjoyed putting the boxes together, and it’s something they can relate to personally as most, if not all of them, have had some member of their families serve during World War Two”.

Angela added: “We’re always trying to think of ways to involve residents in the wider community, and with this some of their relatives were contributing too – so it was a great team effort”.
