THE rains came to Titwood earlier than expected on Saturday and, with only half the derby game between Greaves Clydesdale and NVT Poloc, the Lloyds TSB Scotland Premier League match had to be abandoned.
The first half offered some clues to the competitiveness of these two sides. Clydesdale was off to a flyer, thanks to early boundaries from Zulfiqar Shahid — himself a Poloc player until last year — who made 35.

In-form opener Harmanjit Singh went comparatively cheaply for 31, but even more in-form internationalist Qasim Sheikh picked up the pace with a sparkling 58, while his fellow Scotland Lions player Zeeshan Bashir bashed the ball round the ground for 57, his first half century in the national league.

After a rain break, the final Clydesdale total of 218 was perhaps disappointingly short of what it might have been. But the two sides never emerged after tea as the rain became persistent and heavy.

And Sunday's Scottish Cup game at Arbroath also became a victim of the weather.

But there was good news for Sheikh, who earlier in the week had scored a hundred for the Scotland Lions against Yorkshire's second XI. He has now been selected for the 14-man Scotland squad to play New Zealand and Ireland in Aberdeen next week.
