ON THE sixth weekend of the season, Greaves Clydesdale's cricketers finally came to the party, and celebrated an outstanding nine-wicket victory over second-placed Uddingston in the Lloyds TSB Scotland premier division, writes Mike Stanger.
The Titwood visitors were full of confidence, electing to bat first, with their Aussie pro Ed Cowan averaging 282 in the league thus far. But Cowan was brilliantly levered out of the action by experienced 'Dale all-rounder Greig Williamson, who found
an edge to wicket keeper Craig Smith.
Smith proceeded to claim two stumpings and a further catch for his best-ever league haul, while stand-in skipper Ross Lyons took 3-36 as Uddingston spluttered to 170 all out.
Man-of-the-match Harmanjit Singh, who had already taken two wickets, top scored with 83 not out, his highest for the club. He shared in an unbroken partnership of 104 with internationalist Qasim Sheikh, who also reached his half century as 'Dale won their first match of the season in style.
At Ayr, NVT Poloc fell 19 runs short of what would have been a remarkable victory against the current top-of-the-table team, with new South African pro Gavin Ewing in great all-round form.
Meanwhile in the second division, winless Weirs finally came out of their shells to record their first victory of the season, defeating SMRH by eight wickets at Albert Park.
