HEAVY rain put the recent local sports council's boys' golf tournament at Torrance House in doubt, but the swingers of Renfrewshire golf union beat the weather — and other competitors.
Selectors took a young team, including Philip Gordon (16) whose confidence was high having recorded a hole in one at the Ralston junior open recently.

His score of 75 set a standard for the rest of the team and with three scores to count, Gavin Hay of Whitecraigs golf club greatly helped the cause recording a one over par score in atrocious conditions.

Fraser McNeil from Eastwood had a bad day and pressure switched to 16-year-old Paisley junior, Fergus Smith.

Despite torrential rain which threatened to close the tournament, he came in with a gross 76 giving the team an aggregate of 224 which was good enough to give them the scratch trophy.

Having achieved that, Gavin's 71 also won the individual competition by two strokes.
