WILLIAMWOOD GP Iain Kerr expressed gratitude to his supporters this week, after he was allowed to retain his medical centre contract.
The doctor, currently in the second week of a six-month suspension imposed by the General Medical Council, told the Extra of his relief at being able to keep his practice open and of his plans before returning to the surgery next year.

But, more than both, he was overwhelmed by the support and gratitude shown by patients, who turned out in protest at any prospective further ban ahead of last week's NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hearing.

Dr Kerr told The Extra: "The support of patients was absolutely tremendous, and overwhelming.

"Really, I must thank everyone for their support. There were four or five key figures co-ordinating, but to single them out from everyone else would be unfair as no doubt someone would be missed.

"To everyone who showed support for me I am very grateful — it was so heartening."

Dr Kerr (61) from Newton Mearns was removed from the list of NHSGGC general practitioners, but was allowed to continue running the surgery at Williamwood medical centre.

"I'm absolutely delighted to keep my practice contract — quite surprised actually.

"I was led to believe the day before the hearing that the contract would be cancelled. However there was obviously a change in attitude — what brought that on I don't know."

On Monday, Dr Kerr returned to an old pastime, as a volunteer driver for the Prince and Princess of Wales hospice, but he is still looking to stay involved at Williamwood.

He added: "I'm not allowed to see patients as part of the suspension, however we are looking into whether or not I can continue with paperwork in the background of the practice.

"But on Monday I started back with the hospice — they're always on the lookout for drivers with some time to spare, and I'm pleased to help out once again."

The hard work now starts for Dr Kerr's supporters who at a special meeting last weekend pledged to help him fund a locum during his suspension. Anyone able to come forward with support is asked to contact eastwood-dr@ntlworld.com.
