A SOUTHSIDE rabbi addressed ministers at the Edinburgh
parliament last week.
Rabbi Nancy Morris of Glasgow reform synagogue in Newton Mearns led MSPs in the Time For Reflection prayer.

Rabbi Morris, told The Extra: "It is fairly unusual to have a non-Christian speaker at Time For Reflection. Jews only have the opportunity to do this every so often.

"It was quite an honour and I would love to go back. I was met by my local MSP Ken Macintosh who introduced me, and also met the presiding officer, Alex Fergusson.

"This was my first official visit to the parliament as a rabbi."

Originally from Montreal in Canada, Rabbi Morris moved to Glasgow five years ago. She was invited to address the parliament by presiding officer Alex Fergusson, after she was nominated by Ken Macintosh.

Rabbi Morris added: "It was interesting to get an insight into the political system in Scotland. In Canada there are no such things as constituencies or list candidates.

"On my arrival at Hoyrood I was greeted by representatives of the presiding officer who showed me around the building.

"I stayed for part of the parliamentary business after my speech. The members were talking about housing policy, and it was interesting to see them at work."

Ken Macintosh MSP said: "I was delighted Rabbi Morris was able to lead us in time for reflection.

"She offered some thoughtful remarks on the impact a small country or people can make on the world.

"I was particularly pleased because I believe it is important to remind my fellow MSPs of our own Jewish community in Scotland and the contribution its members make."
